Best Skincare for Large Pores and Oily Skin

If we want to talk about the best skincare for large pores and oily skin, we must know why it happens and what works, and how to prevent it. Let’s be honest—don’t we all worry about how big our pores are? Like, why my pores so big on my cheeks!- Even if you have relatively small pores, once you start noticing them in the mirror or under makeup, it’s hard not to obsess. And if you have oily skin, it can feel like your pores are getting larger, and that can be annoying.

But before you get overly obsessed, know this: pore size is not entirely out of your control. While there is no such thing as closing the pores, you can make them look smaller and prevent them from stretching further. Understanding what causes enlarged pores—and how to manage them with the right products—can make a huge difference in your skin’s texture and overall clarity. So let’s get into how to get rid of clogged pores, and let’s not forget, the best pore tightening product recommendation!

What Are Pores, and Why Do They Get Bigger?

Your pores are tiny openings in the skin that allow sebum (oil) and sweat to reach the surface. They play a crucial role in skin health—but when they’re clogged or stretched, they become more visible.

What Causes Enlarged Pores:

  1. Excess Oil Production
Oily skin types tend to have visibly larger pores because excess sebum stretches the pore walls.
  2. Clogged Pores
When oil mixes with dead skin cells, dirt, and bacteria, it gets trapped inside the pore. That buildup stretches the pore and may lead to blackheads or breakouts.
  3. Oxidation (Blackheads)
You might be doing everything right with your skincare, but if your skin naturally produces a lot of oil, it’s still possible for pores to clog.
When sebum is trapped in the pore and exposed to air, it oxidizes—turning into a blackhead. And guess what? The longer that buildup sits there, the more your pores can stretch.
  4. Loss of Elasticity
As we age, collagen breaks down, and gravity pulls our skin down, causing it to lose its firmness. This slack in the skin makes pores appear larger and less tight.
  5. Genetics
Some of us are just born with larger pores. -Thanks, Mom and Dad!- But even if it’s in your genes, you can still manage how visible your pores become with the right care.

Can You Shrink Pores?

Here’s the truth: you can’t permanently shrink pores. But you can absolutely:

  • Minimize their appearance
  • Keep them clean
  • Prevent them from getting bigger

Pores that are unclogged and surrounded by firm, healthy skin look tighter and smaller.

How to Prevent Pores From Getting Bigger

Even if you have very oily skin, cleansing well and keeping a good skincare routine can prevent getting oxidized blackheads so that your pores can be less visible.

1. Cleanse Daily—But With the Right Product

To prevent pores from stretching, you must remove daily buildup of oil, makeup, sunscreen, and pollution.

You want to prevent pores from getting any bigger, so it’s important to cleanse each day with the right products for your skin type.
Foaming or gel cleansers work best for oily skin. Look for ingredients like Salicylic acid (BHA), which is oil-soluble, it helps break down the oil sebum being trapped in your pores. If you have combination skin, choose a slightly foamy cleanser, like a gentle gel cleanser.

2. Exfoliate to Prevent Buildup

Even with proper cleansing, some oil and dead skin cells still hang around. Exfoliation helps remove that buildup, keeping pores clear and refined.

Chemical exfoliants (like AHAs and BHAs) work better than scrubs for most people because they’re less abrasive and more effective at targeting and getting inside the pore.

Tip: Start 2–3 times a week and increase as your skin tolerates it. Or if it dries out your skin, slow down to 1-2 times a week for your skin to adjust.

3. Use Clay or Charcoal Masks Weekly

For those with oily or combination skin, masks can be very helpful. Clay and charcoal draw out impurities, absorb excess sebum, and help tighten the appearance of pores. But be careful not to strip too much oil if you have combination skin.

There’s more than cleansing when it comes to preventing pores from getting clogged—exfoliating and using a clay mask weekly can work wonders. For super oily skin, maybe even try a charcoal mask. Use 1–2 times a week, especially in areas like the T-zone where oil tends to collect.

4. Balance with Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a multitasking ingredient that:

  • Regulates sebum production
  • Minimizes the look of pores
  • Strengthens the skin barrier

It’s lightweight, non-irritating, and plays well with most other active ingredients—making it perfect for oily skin.

5. Protect with Sunscreen (Yes, Daily!)

You may not realize it, but sun damage makes your pores worse over time. UV rays break down collagen and elastin, causing the skin to sag and pores to stretch.

A good sunscreen helps preserve skin firmness and keeps pores from enlarging due to collagen loss.

Look for:

  • Mineral-based formulas (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide)
  • Mattifying finish
  • Non-comedogenic

Tips to Keep Your Pores in Check

  • Don’t sleep in makeup—this suffocates your pores and causes buildup.
  • Use oil-free, non-comedogenic products—in both skincare and makeup.
  • Stay hydrated—dehydrated skin can overcompensate by producing more oil.
  • Watch your diet—high-sugar or high-dairy diets may increase oiliness and breakouts.
  • Never squeeze blackheads—this can damage the pore lining and stretch it permanently. And it’s the last thing you want, getting infected by bacteria from your fingertips! If you must, do it in a shower or after a steam with clean hands. Make sure to clean the area with a toner.

Final Thoughts

Even though you can’t completely get rid of pores (and you wouldn’t want to—they’re essential!), you can absolutely keep them clean, tight, and less noticeable. The key is being consistent with a smart skincare routine that includes:

  • Daily cleansing
  • Regular exfoliation
  • Weekly purifying masks
  • Oil-balancing ingredients
  • Sun protection

Large pores might be part of your genetics—but they don’t have to define your skin. With the right care and a few targeted products, you can maintain a smoother, more refined complexion that radiates health and confidence.
