Skincare Dos and Donts: Glow the Smart Way!

Today, we’re diving into essential skincare dos and donts that will transform your routine from confusing to conscious, helping you achieve that radiant glow you’ve always desired. Taking care of your skin isn’t just about having a cabinet full of expensive products—it’s about building smart habits, understanding what your skin truly needs, and being consistent. And sometimes, it’s the smallest things (like not cleaning your glasses!) that can make a world of difference. You don’t want to make skincare mistakes that damage your skin!

Let’s dive into the dos and don’ts of skincare (plus, excellent products pics!)— from gentle exfoliation to why your toothpaste might be your skin’s secret enemy. Ready? Let’s glow!

Skincare Dos

Do Exfoliate Regularly (But Gently)

Without regular exfoliation, your skincare products won’t work as effectively as they could. — If your skin is covered in old, dead cells, serums and moisturizers can’t get where they need to go.

Gentle exfoliation clears the way for your skin to drink in all the goodness you’re giving it. The key is to use a gentle cleanser daily basis, then use appropriate exfoliation according to your skin type for couple of times a week. Chemical exfoliation, like AHA/BHA products, are great choice.

Do Use a Sheet Mask Once a Week

Sheet masks have a ton of serums that are super helpful to keep your skin in control. They are the ultimate “treat yourself” moment. Even affordable ones can give your skin an instant boost. Pick your sheet mask based on what your skin needs:

  • Dry skin? Look for hyaluronic acid or ceramides.
  • Anti-aging? Choose masks with peptides, collagen, or growth factors.
  • Oily skin? A charcoal or intense clay mask will help detox and balance.

Lay back, relax, and let your sheet mask do the heavy lifting once a week!

Do Keep Your Glasses (and Hats!) Clean

If your glasses are sitting on your nose all day — or if you love rocking hats or have bangs — you must clean those surfaces regularly.

Use a little alcohol to clean glasses where they touch your skin. The same goes for hat brims and even hair accessories. Otherwise, bacteria and oils build up, suffocating the skin and causing irritation, breakouts, and even rashes. Fresh skin needs fresh gear!

Do Exercise for Healthy Skin

Getting your heart pumping is one of the most underrated beauty hacks. Exercise improves blood circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to your skin cells, which boosts your glow from the inside out.

Just remember — always cleanse your skin after sweating! Sweat contains sodium (salt), which can cause irritation, clogged pores, and even flare-ups like eczema if left sitting on your skin too long.

Do Use Sunscreen Daily Basis, Never Underestimate The Power Of Sunscreen

Daily sunscreen isn’t optional—it’s essential! While exfoliating and hydrating are important steps in your skincare routine, without sun protection, these efforts can be counterproductive. UV damage can accelerate aging, cause hyperpigmentation, and even worsen skin conditions you’re trying to treat. Sunscreen is the shield that preserves all the good work you’re doing for your skin.

Do Hydrate and Prioritize Sleep

The basics are basics for a reason:

  • Drink water throughout the day to keep your skin plump and clear.
  • Prioritize your beauty sleep! Nighttime is when your skin repairs itself. Skimping on sleep can lead to dullness, dark circles, and even breakouts.

Glowing skin loves hydration and a good night’s rest!

Skincare Don’ts

Don’t Pick at Your Skin

Tempting? Absolutely. Worth it? Never.

Fingertips and nails carry tons of bacteria. Picking at pimples can worsen infections, cause painful inflammation, and leave you with long-term discoloration or even scarring. Trust your esthetician, and in between appointments, use targeted spot treatments instead of playing doctor.

Don’t Touch Your Face Unconsciously

Some habits are so ingrained we don’t even notice them — like resting your chin on your hand while working, or touching your cheeks or forehead while you’re on a Zoom meeting, don’t we all?

Each touch transfers bacteria, dirt, and oils, setting you up for clogged pores and breakouts. Make a conscious effort to keep your hands off your face, and you’ll notice a huge difference.

Don’t Overuse Pimple Patches

Pimple patches (especially hydrocolloid ones) are lifesavers at the right time — usually when a blemish is at its peak, with excess fluid.

But if the pimple has already dried up, slapping a patch on it can overly dehydrate the skin and leave behind stubborn discoloration. Timing is everything!

Don’t Let Toothpaste Touch Your Skin

Yes, seriously — your toothpaste might be messing with your chin area!

Toothpaste often contains hydrogen peroxide and other strong ingredients meant to whiten teeth, not touch sensitive facial skin. Even a quick rinse doesn’t guarantee that residue isn’t irritating your skin. If you notice uneven tone or tiny breakouts around your mouth, this could be why.

Don’t Use a Stripping Cleanser

You might think your face needs to feel “squeaky clean” to be clean — but that’s a big no-no.

If your cleanser leaves your skin tight or squeaky, it’s stripping away not just dirt, but your natural oils, which protect your skin barrier. Instead, use a gentle, hydrating cleanser daily and do your exfoliation with AHA/BHA a couple of times a week to keep skin fresh without compromising its health.

Don’t Scrub Right Before Using Acids

Physical exfoliants (scrubs) can leave the skin surface uneven. If you immediately follow with a chemical exfoliant (like an AHA or BHA serum), it can sit unevenly on the skin, leading to irritation or even chemical burns.

Instead, if you want to prep your skin for acid exfoliation, degrease it with a toner or acetone-based prep solution. Treat your skin like delicate silk — not like a dirty countertop!

Don’t get a first-time facial right before your big event.

If you’re preparing for a special event, like your wedding, and want to have radiant, glowing skin, it’s best to start planning your skincare routine well in advance. While facials are a great way to support your skin’s health, even the best treatments take time to show lasting results. For the best outcome, consider starting at least six months ahead with monthly treatments. This approach not only helps you achieve your glow goals but also gives your skin time to adjust and reduces the risk of any unexpected reactions close to your big day.

Lastly, don’t fix what isn’t broken!

This is especially for younger people. If your skin is already calm and healthy, resist the urge to overdo it. A flawless complexion doesn’t always mean it’s resilient — in fact, it can often be quite sensitive underneath. Stick to a simple, consistent routine that supports and maintains your skin’s natural balance. Sometimes, less is more. Preserve the glow you have — that alone is one of the best forms of prevention.

The Glow is in the Details ✨

At the end of the day, skincare is all about creating a supportive environment for your skin to thrive. It’s not about being perfect — it’s about being consistent and intentional.

Remember: Little daily habits make a huge difference over time. Exfoliate smartly, hydrate consistently, respect your skin barrier, and don’t underestimate the power of good blood circulation and sunscreen.

Treat your skin like the queen it is — and it will return the favor with a radiant, healthy glow!
